Sewing has a special place in my heart - It was taught to me by my Grandmother who was my safe space. If you are ever at the studio, check out the handmade aprons that my Grandmother and I crafted together.
A few years back I had the opportunity to share my love of sewing with the community of Gig Harbor, Washington - when I became the owner of Stitch-O-Roo and Art Too which has allowed me to keep my grandmothers love of creating and share it. Over the next year I will share my love of art with the community by offering pottery, yarn other artistic forms of creation to share with families as we expand we are now - Creative Little Studios. In the next few blogs will be sharing more about those new creative opportunities... but first, lets start with sewing... As we are always and forever, The Home of Stich-O-Roo!
Sewing is an art that has transcended generations, bringing not just functionality but also creativity into our lives. In today's fast-paced world, where fashion trends change almost daily, the idea of sewing your own clothes can seem daunting. However, it is also incredibly rewarding. Creating your own garments allows you to express your unique personality, build a sustainable wardrobe, and develop a new skill. If you are considering diving into this wonderful world of fabric, let’s explore the journey of creating with sewing.
The Benefits of Sewing Classes
Why should you consider taking sewing classes? Here are some compelling reasons:
Skill Development: Sewing classes provide structured lessons from experienced instructors, which is vital for beginners. You will learn essential techniques, from basic stitches to advanced pattern-making.
Customization: One of the greatest joys of sewing is the ability to create garments that fit your body perfectly. Many people find it hard to find clothing that suits their shape just right; sewing gives you the freedom to tailor your own sizes and styles.
Cost-Effective Fashion: Although starting with sewing can be an investment, creating your own clothes can lead to significant savings. Instead of purchasing expensive designer items, you can craft high-quality pieces at a fraction of the cost.
Sustainability: The fast fashion industry contributes to significant environmental damage. By sewing your own clothes, you can support sustainable practices by choosing eco-friendly materials and producing fewer clothes.
Building Community: You'll find fast friends at one of our sewing camps located in downtown Gig Harbor.

Essential Tools for Sewing
Before you dive into any sewing class, it is helpful to familiarize yourself with essential tools and equipment. Here are some basics every aspiring seamstress should have:
Sewing Machine: A reliable sewing machine is your most important tool. If you don’t have one, inquire if your class provides machines for use during sessions.
Fabric Scissors: Invest in a good pair of fabric scissors to ensure clean cuts.
Measuring Tape: Accurate measurements are crucial in sewing; a flexible measuring tape is necessary for taking body measurements and measuring fabric.
Pins and Pin Cushion: Pins help to temporarily hold fabric pieces together as you sew. A pin cushion keeps them organized and within reach.
Thread: Choose high-quality thread that matches your fabric. Don’t forget extra spools for different projects!
Iron and Ironing Board: Pressing fabric is essential for achieving crisp seams and professional-looking pieces, so it’s a necessary tool to have in your sewing kit.
